In 2015 the Sydney University Graduate Choir, with the gracious support of Miss Joan Carden AO OBE, is again conducting the Joan Carden Award competition.
This Award aims to:
- identify and encourage young singing talent
- strengthen the Choir’s relationship with the University of Sydney and the Sydney music community, and
- honour the contribution of Joan Carden to music in Australia.
Young singers aged between 22 and 35 years have been invited to become part of this exciting event! For the first time, the finalists will sing with an orchestra in the Choir’s August concert in the Great Hall of the University of Sydney, with the adjudicators selecting the winner and the audience voting for the ‘People’s Choice’!
The Award has a cash prize of $6,000 and the opportunity to perform as a soloist in one of the Choir’s forthcoming concerts. Entries closed on 1 May 2015.
The distinguished adjudicators in 2015 are Miss Joan Carden AO OBE, Mr Christopher Bowen OAM (Music Director of the Sydney University Graduate Choir), and Mr Anson Austin OAM.
The semi-finals (incorporating a Masterclass with Miss Carden herself) took place on Sunday 14 June.
The finalists are:
Ashlyn Tymms, mezzo-soprano
Soon-ki Park, baritone
Morgan Balfour, soprano
Congratulations to our wonderful finalists! And commiserations to our other semi-finalists who also sang superbly.
The finalists will each sing two pieces in our concert in the Great Hall at 3pm on Sunday 16 August.
